“...in full parade dress, their waists, fat or slender, tightened to the utmost.”
A minor cosmetic detail, but one that makes me say: YES! Waists tightened to the utmost are half of what the army is about.

“...what was talked about at the council–the future battle and undoubted victory–seemed no longer future but past.”
A battle won before it’s fought: such a natural tendency to take the future for granted; and the terror of doing so!

The contrast between Nikolai and Boris when they are closer to the mechanism that controls the mass’s fate: Nikolai wants to turn into a nameless cog in that machine; Boris wants to be part of the control panel.
