Bilbin “worked equally well whatever the essence of the work consisted of. He was interested not in the question 'Why?’ but in the question ‘How?’” These qualities, along with his magic wrinkles, make him a spectacular character.

Two details in Br​​ünn that mark Andrei as more special than his compatriots: in the whirlwind of activities he is still composing a letter to his father mentally; and he stops at a bookstore to stock up his reading material.

In P/V translation: “dead horses, skinned or unskinned”; in Briggs: “fallen horses, flayed and unflayed.” Dead and deader horses tell stories. (Though skinned seems to stand out more than flayed: I had a more physical reaction.)
