“He noticed a solitary tree ahead… in the middle of the line that seemed so terrible. But then they crossed that line…”
A good life lesson from Nikolai: one crosses a dreaded line and remains well and alive; there are more lines to cross ahead.

“He seized his pistol and, instead of firing it, threw it at the Frenchman, and ran for the bushes as fast as he could.”
The most brilliant move: it’s not Chekhov’s pistol to be fired at act III; it’s a toy, and NIkolai is only a teenage boy.

A cannon with a name: the Briggs translation calls it “Matthew’s Girl”; P/V, “Matvevna” (presumably it means Matthew’s Girl). I much prefer the latter: what a heroine she is, to save the army, then offer injured Nikolai a haven on his retreat.
