An effective externalization of instinct and subconsciousness.

The excitement felt by Nikolai is replaced by the feeling of cowardice; Andrei’s rehearsal to triumph and glory is met by the cold reception at the Austrian court. Oh, these dreamers, confronted by the anticlimax and irony of war.

“...the feeling of a man who has long been awaiting and has finally achieved the beginning of the happiness he desired.”
One has to have a soft spot for Andrei: “the beginning of the happiness” is a more beautiful mirage than happiness itself.
