Princess Marya “came in with her heavy step, planting her heels”—a contrast to the earlier entrance of Natasha into a room, light steps full of life.

Vassily and Little Princess talking as people with shared memory, Anatole flirting with Bourienne: they are the best actors. Their scripts are old and familiar, and yet they put their whole hearts into performing clichés.

A highly memorable moment of old Prince Bolkonsky when he orders the road to be unswept. Even a humorless character can make us laugh at times. Great to revisit Alix Christie’s comment from TOLSTOY TOGETHER: 85 DAYS OF WAR AND PEACE.
