Day 27

Villette by Charlotte Brontë

Chapter XXXVI

December 11, 2022 by Yiyun Li

A spaniel is not enough to describe the cute little dog; a spanieless it must be. (It reminds me that two friends both sternly demanded that I remove the word “poetess” from a manuscript once).

...a small spanieless (if one may coin a word)...

The chapter could be titled “The religious reeducation of Lucy Snowe: the necessity and the futility of such an endeavor.” I probably feel more depressed than Lucy about this reeducation.

And yet, dear Lucy Snowe, we must agree that human history is a long narrative of one group of people imposing disinheritance over another group of people.

Strange! I had no such feverish wish to turn him from the faith of his fathers.
