Monday Memo

February 11, 2019

This week we're talking about:

  • Jonas Mekas, and Diana Athill, two titans of the artistic world, and the lives they lived, and reading remembrances of them, by Manohla Dargis and Damian Barr, respectively, alongside Victoria Chang's poem, "Obit," in APS No. 27.
  • Joseph Buttigieg, who passed away recently, was, besides being the father of new presidential hopeful Pete Buttigeig, a noted scholar of James Joyce and Antonio Gramsci whose contributions to the field were significant. Do you know of any other presidential candidates with literary connections?
  • In New York literary news, the Center for Fiction opens and McNally Jackson expands, and on Tuesday, it's a very A Public Space evening at the 92nd Street Y, as contributor Danielle Evans introduces Jamel Brinkley, who reads alongside Valeria Luiselli, and tickets are still available.
  • Looking for a perfect Valentine's Day gift? We have subscriptions, chic totes and notebooks, and tickets to upcoming A Public Space Academy master classes and workshops with instructors including Sara Majka and Claire Messud for sale in our store.
  • And introducing Eva Speer (pictured), whose debut in APS No. 27, "Zuiver," we've made free for all to read this week. Please share, and enjoy.
