Day 2 (November 19) Part I, Chapter II
Monsignor Quixote by Graham Greenepp. 17-29
November 19, 2024 by Yiyun Li
“I want to believe. And I want others to believe.”
“Why?”
“I want them to be happy.”
“Let them drink a little vodka then. That’s better than a make-believe.”
Every Quixote deserves a Sancho and every Quixote is not a complete character without a Sancho. Like their ancestors, the communist Sancho makes Father Quixote’s follies fresh and interesting.
“But you continue to read those old books of theology. They are your books of chivalry.”
All great readers of fiction have their books of chivalry. Sometimes I go around talking about War and Peace and Moby-Dick with the same Quixotic spirit to the young and possible disbelieving minds.
“We must have something in common, father, or why do you go with me?”
“I suppose—friendship?”
Sancho speaks pragmatic truths about the world, but Father Quixote speaks the emotional truths about people. One can go on listening to them forever.
