Monday Memo

December 10, 2018

  • We're still floating on a cloud after our first-ever benefit party last week in New York, where we celebrated twelve years of A Public Space and presented Michael Silverblatt with the inaugural Deborah Pease Prize. New to his Bookworm, which celebrates thirty years in 2019? The Washington Post recently named it a top book podcast, and the Financial Times says it's a way to be better read in the New Year. Tune in. And visit our Facebook page for a first selection of photos, with more to come.
  • Ann Beattie dazzled us with her remarks on Thursday night when she presented the prize to Michael, and in a wonderful stroke of serendipity, Kirkus Reviews published a rave of her forthcoming novel that very day. A Wonderful Stroke of Luck will be published by Viking in April, and "obvious is one thing Beattie never is. Her elegantly sculpted tale is both wrenchingly sad and ultimately enigmatic: as usual."
  • Our store is updated for the holidays, with a very limited edition of A Public Space contributor Annie Coggan's artist project, based on her Lily Bart feature in the new issue. Snap them up for the person in your life who always has their annotated copy of Edith Wharton's The House of Mirth within reach. Last day for orders to guarantee Christmas delivery is December 17.
  • A Public Space No. 27 is in hand! And in the shop. Any new gift subscription will begin with the new issue.
  • The hottest new literary series in America, award-winning author (The Mourner's Bench) Sanderia Smith's LitNight in Dallas, is happening this week and features 2018 A Public Space Fellow LaToya Watkins, whose story "Tipping" is in the new No. 27. If you're in the area, check it out.
