Starting Out: The Editor-Writer Relationship

What is an editor's role? How can an author work with an editor to elevate their writing? Join Writing and Editorial Fellows from A Public Space for a conversation about the editor-writer relationship. They'll discuss lessons learned and insights gained, formative experiences, and their questions for each other about the surprises they found on their side of the relationship. With Editorial Fellow Lydia Mathis and Writing Fellows Kate Doyle, Cory Howell Hamada, and Kyle Francis Williams. Moderated by Ruby Wang, associate managing editor at A Public Space. Audience members will have an opportunity to ask questions. Ruby Wang
is the associate managing editor at A Public Space. She received her MA in English and American literature at New York University. Her work can be found in Annulet: A Journal of Poetics. She was the 2022 A Public Space Editorial Fellow. She lives in Brooklyn and is originally from Reno, NV.
Lydia Mathis
is the 2023 A Public Space Editorial Fellow. She has an MFA in fiction from New York University. She earned her BA in English literature with a minor in classical civilizations from Agnes Scott College. She has worked as a teacher for Teach for America in Memphis and as a teaching fellow at Coler-Goldwater Hospital in New York City. She has stories published in Five on the Fifth and oranges journal.
Kate Doyle
is the author of the short story collection I Meant It Once, published by Algonquin Books in the US and Corsair in the UK. A 2021 A Public Space fellow, she is a former bookseller and her stories have been published in No Tokens, The Millions, Joyland, Split Lip, Electric Literature, Wigleaf, and elsewhere.
Kyle Francis Williams
was a 2019 A Public Space Writing Fellow. He is a writer living in Brooklyn. He is an Interviews Editor for Full Stop and a recent MFA graduate of the Michener Center. His fiction has appeared in A Public Space, Southern Humanities Review, Epiphany, Southampton Review, and Joyland. He is at work on a novel.
