Maisy Card's novel, These Ghosts Are Family, started out as short stories. How did she and her editor go about stitching separate stories together into a cohesive novel? What was their working process? Using examples from the novel, we will explore the editorial process that went into transforming a collection of stories into a debut novel.

Maisy Card

is the author of the novel These Ghosts Are Family (Simon & Schuster). A public librarian, she holds an MFA in Fiction from Brooklyn College. She was born in St. Catherine, Jamaica, and raised in Queens, New York. She lives in Newark, NJ.

Christine Pride

is a writer, editor, and fifteen-year publishing veteran. She has held posts at Doubleday, Crown, Simon & Schuster, and elsewhere. As an editor, she has worked on the New York Times bestseller From Scratch by Tembi Locke; The Roxy Letters by Mary Pauline Lowry; and These Ghosts Are Family by Maisy Card. She and Jo Piazza wrote the novel We Are Not Like Them, which will be published next year by HarperCollins/William Morrow.
