A Bette Howland Book Club

Sep
9

Monday, September 9 | 6:30–8:30 p.m. The Wing Flatiron, 45 E 20th St, 11th Floor New York, NY 10003

Howland’s insights into the shifting gender dynamics that would reshape, or at least disrupt, the patriarchy, are just one facet of the revolutionary nature of her work. Why then, did it disappear from the discourse? ...The recent celebration of fellow forgotten female artists, the short story writer Lucia Berlin, championed by Lydia Davis, or the painter Hilma af Klint, showcased at the Guggenheim, reminds us how necessary it is to restore these visionaries.
—Jenessa Abrams, Guernica

A Public Space is teaming up with The Wing Flatiron for a discussion and Q&A on Bette Howland's Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, the debut title from A Public Space Books.

Making Space for Bette Howland
Monday, September 9
6:30–8:30 p.m.
The Wing Flatiron
45 E 20th St Rooftop (11th Floor if it's raining)
New York, NY 10003

A Public Space associate editor Sarah Blakley-Cartwright will lead the discussion with an introduction by founding editor Brigid Hughes, who was instrumental in bringing public attention to Howland's singular work. We'll focus on three stories from Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage, Howland's masterful collection: “Aronesti,” “Calm Sea and Prosperous Voyage,” and “Blue in Chicago." We encourage you to pick up a copy and dip into these stories pre-event.

This event is open to A Public Space subscribers. Email megan@apublicspace.org to be added to the guest list (required).

We hope to see you at The Wing! Please check in at the front desk upon arrival.

A note from The Wing:
Understanding that gender identity is not always consistent with someone's sex assigned at birth, guests are welcome at The Wing regardless of their perceived gender or gender identity. With that said, we ask that you keep in mind when visiting with guests that The Wing is a space designed for women with a women's-focused mission.
