The Uncanny in Fiction

In his 1919 essay, Freud called the uncanny something that should have remained hidden that has come to light. He talks about the uncanniness of doubles, eyes, automatons, dolls.

In this workshop, we’ll further explore the term—and how it works in fiction. We’ll look at Freud’s “The Uncanny,” E.T.A. Hoffmann’s “The Sandman,” and Masahiro Mori’s “The Uncanny Valley.” We’ll then look at classic and contemporary fiction that might feel uncanny to us and consider the ways that it works, including the use of voice, childhood memory, repression, and ambiguity.

Time will be divided between reading discussion, generative writing, and peer workshop. Each participant will have the opportunity to have their writing workshopped by the group and will receive an editorial letter from me as well. Please know that the uncanny is an accommodating term and much that is strange and hard to pin down can fit in this workshop.
