An Atlas of Everything: Maps, Unseen Worlds, and Writing
Many narratives function like sportscars on the open road or a hunter’s lung-seeking arrow. They move swiftly to their target: the end. Ursula K. LeGuin wrote, “I’m not telling that story. We’ve heard it, we’ve all heard all about all the sticks, spears, and swords…but we have not heard about the thing to put things in, the container for the thing contained. That is a new story.” A map is a container, and an atlas even more so. An atlas includes thousands of routes that interlace and cross. Plus, we might get lost (from los, a disbanding of our armies). When we write in a cartographic model, we dissolve borders and boundaries. Personhood realizes its plurality. Fernando Pessoa says, “I know myself only as a symphony.” This generative Master Class will contain gorgeous maps, texts, and writing prompts to help us consider the cartographic in our writing as we zoom through macro and miniature worlds; and consider the anachronous simultaneity of history, memory, the present, and the future as we walk the world as psycho-geographers, awakened to wonder.
