Short Story as Experiment
What is the process by which a short story is created, made, animated? Which instincts, habits, and preoccupations energize our writing lives—and how can we become more at home in them? This generative workshop is about deepening your relationship with the writing process and what it can offer: surprise, possibility, curiosity, a space to experiment. We’ll look at different ways of beginning a short story and consider how, from a few first sentences, a writer finds the way forward. What’s alive, what’s evolving, and how can you use that to keep going to sustain a story, find its full scope, and see it through to the ending? We’ll write often, sustain some of our writing into longer pieces, and work to understand how we did this so we can keep doing it in our ongoing writing lives. Fiction readings will be paired with essays and interviews by the authors: We’ll aim to deepen our relationships to our own writing processes by engaging with other writers’ attempts to do the same.
