The 2025 A Public Space Editorial Fellows

YASMIN BASHIR, THEODORE HEIL

If writers provide a window to the world, editors are the ones who help them build these apertures in audacious places and through astonishing angles. The Editorial Fellowship at A Public Space aims to support aspiring editors in this work. We are delighted to announce Yasmin Bashir and Theodore Heil as the 2025 Editorial Fellows. This June, they join A Public Space for a six-month fellowship, which includes mentorship in editing, hands-on experience, and the opportunity to develop a portfolio for the magazine.

Yasmin Bashir

In her application, Yasmin Bashir discussed her interest in anonymity and ephemerality in art, the urgency of Benjamin Krusling’s poetry collection, Glaring, and Bernadette Mayer’s inquisitiveness as a model for the work she aims to champion as an editor. We’re excited for her to bring her interest in experimental forms, ambition for redefining the market, and dedication to literature to the fellowship this year at A Public Space.

Yasmin Bashir received a BA in sociology and sexuality studies from the University of Kansas. She has worked as an artist assistant in Chicago and editorial assistant at Grove Atlantic. She lives in New York City.

Theodore Heil

In his application, Theodore Heil discussed the multimedia artist Tammy Nguyen’s blending of image and word in O; the influence of Wisława Szymborska’s poetry, and the way her work cultivates attention; and his interest as an editor in supporting work that questions the writerly “ideal” through non-traditional methods. We are delighted that he will bring his discerning eye for visual narrative, his ear for language, and his curiosity about influence and interpretation to the fellowship this year at A Public Space.

Theodore Heil received a BA from Sarah Lawrence College, where he studied poetry. His work has been published in Farewell Transmission, Book of Matches, and elsewhere. He lives in Manhattan.

The Editorial Fellowships are supported, in part, by public funds from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs in partnership with the City Council. Our gratitude also to the individuals, organizations, and foundations who share our commitment to the mission of these fellowships and have provided crucial support, including the Hawthornden Foundation and Amazon Literary Partnership.
